The safari is over for “Love on the Spectrum” couple Abbey Romeo and David Isaacmann.
Since their debut on season one of the series, the lion-loving couple has been a fan favorite. Millions of viewers cheered for the pair as they fell in love, with many believing that Romeo and Isaacman would be the next “Love on the Spectrum” couple to get engaged.
However, on April 10, Romeo and Isaacman told People magazine that their love affair is officially over.
Why their love affair became so iconic
Romeo and Isaacman bonded over their shared love of animals, especially lions. But this romance was more than fur-deep.
Over four seasons of “Love on the Spectrum,” we watched Romeo and Isaacman create a beautiful love story. Isaacman would protectively cover Romeo’s ears when there was loud music or unexpected noises (she is sensitive to sounds), while Romeo showered him in compliments, once telling him, “You’re the best boyfriend because you treat me very well, like a Power Ranger.”
Romeo even wrote him a love song, with enduringly quotable lines like “You’re the milk to my Chardonnay” and “You’re the lion to my lioness.”
The heartbreaking reason their ‘fairytale’ fell apart
The U.S. Sun was the first to break the news of the split, which the couple and their families later confirmed in a joint statement to People magazine.
“At this point, they want different things and have decided to go their separate ways,” the statement read in part, adding that they “remain friends wishing each other the best.”
While the announcement stunned millions of viewers, observant fans noted signs of trouble during the fourth season of “Love on the Spectrum,” which premiered in April 2026. For those watching closely, it was clear that the lion and lioness had different priorities.
When another couple on the season, Madison Marilla and Tyler White, got engaged, Romeo was eager to be next in line. Romeo excitedly suggested that they should be the next couple to head to the altar, and she began dreaming up a “Lion King” ceremony at the San Diego Safari Park or in Kenya.
However, Isaacman seemed more cautious about such a big step. He told producers that he “wasn’t ready to do the real thing yet,” and he told Romeo that they would only get engaged “when the time was right.”
A different kind of happy ending
Although Romeo and Isaacman won’t be tying the knot, they are still in each other’s corner—or rather, each other’s pride. They plan to remain close friends, which is a relief for fans as these two were proof-positive that true love exists.
However, now that love will be platonic and rooted in their shared love of family, wildlife conservation, and their artistic endeavors.
Romeo is continuing to find great success with her custom headwear business, Abbey’s Hats, and Isaacman has a children’s book coming out in August 2026. The book is called “The Big Five Save the Lions,” and part of the proceeds will go to a San Diego animal sanctuary.
So, even though Isaacman and Romeo are no longer a romantic couple, their support for each other remains strong. Sometimes a happy ending doesn’t end in wedding bells but rather in two people helping each other grow into the best versions of themselves.
